New USMC Teen L.I.N.K.S. class set to start tomorrow

Date Posted: 2008-08-08

Marine Corps Family Team Building is reaching out to teenagers by offering a L I N K S program just for teens.

The Lifestyle Insights, Networking, Knowledge and Skills class is designed to help Marine Corps teens look to one another to understand the Marine Corps mission and how it affects them. During the new L.I.N.K.S. session on Friday at “The Top” on Camp Courtney, teens will connect with other teens by sharing real-life experiences and discover positive ways to deal with challenges of growing up in a military environment.

The session, open to dependants and military members from all services, takes place 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at “The Top”, adjacent to the Division Family Readiness Center. Topics for discussion include The Corps and how family relationships fit, volunteering, money management, moving, separation and deployment, and relationships. Teen L.I.N.K.S. is tailored to youth ages 12~18.

The program is video and web-based with an emphasis on group discussions helping teens connect with others by sharing fears, struggles and concerns associated with being a military teen.

The success of L.I.N.K.S. for spouses prompted development of the special L.I.N.K.S. programs to reach military children and teens. Looking for the best sources of information, MCFTB headquarters asked military kids and teenagers what common problems arise from being a military dependent, what topics they’d like to learn about, and what activities they’d enjoy participating in. From there, the Marine Corps Family Team Building staff designed the special curriculum for Teen L.I.N.K.S.
