Nakijin Village rolls out the festival welcome mat

Itís the 29th Nakijin Village Festival Saturday and Sunday, but it is really much more, as the village celebrates its 100 years anniversary.

The weekend festival kicks off Saturday with opening ceremonies at 3:15 p.m., and runs through the closing fireworks exhibition Sunday at 8:45 p.m. Festival events all take place around the Nakijin Village Station open plaza, and at the bullfighting arena. Aside from the standard food, beverage and entertainment booths, Nakijin Village will be promoting locally produced products at select booths.

Ryukyu University professional wrestlers get the energy flowing with a tournament beginning at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by Hokuzan High School brass band and dance club performances. Okinawan traditional dance performances lead into the evening with live entertainment and a karaoke festival.

At the arena, meanwhile, bullfights take place from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., followed at 7:30 p.m. by a Crown performance.

Sunday opens early, 8 a.m., with a seven-hour fishing tournament.. The Nakijin Village products sales booths, as well as food and drink booths, open at 3 pm. A Childrenís sumo wrestling tournament, childrenís tug-of-war and Okinawa dances again lead up to the live music starting at 7:25 p.m. Okinawa traditional taiko drums will be center stage at 8 p.m., heralding the closing fireworks at 8:45 p.m.
