Police searching for gun toting post office robber

Date Posted: 2008-07-31

A special task force of 74 police officers are conducting an Okinawa manhunt to locate and capture a man who robbed a Naha City Post Office of more than ¥3 million.

The gunman entered the Uema Post Office at 1:27 p.m. last Thursday, approaching the staff, gun in hand, demanding “Hey! Give me money right now. Give it to me now.” He was the only customer in the post office, together with four postal staff workers.

“Don’t shoot. I will give you the money” was the immediate appeal from the post office director, who took money from the safe and gave it to the robber. The gunman took the money and fled, followed by the director and two staffers who gave chase. The man fled down a narrow alley and disappeared.

Police, after taking statements from the postal workers, said it appears “the guy was not real. It looked like a toy, but the employees were so frightened they couldn’t tell the difference.” The robber was wearing gray color work clothes, and wore glasses. Witnesses say he was 50~60 years old.
