Date Posted: 2008-07-30

An elementary school in Kyoto Prefecture has been chosen as the site for the first-ever school to be taught predominantly in English.
Doshisha University says it will start the school in 2001, with classes aimed at serving Kansai Science City families of foreign researchers. The school projects having 30 students maximum in each class, with three classes set for each school grade. University officials say the school will be called Doshisha International Elementary School.
The new international school will have three varying curriculums, including an eight-year set of studies almost exclusively in English. The other two classes will offer a six-year curriculum similar to other elementary schools, geared to meet needs of Japanese students now studying in foreign countries. Officials say they’ve not decided yet what the predominant language will be for the two mixed classes.
