Okinawa women get high marks for work

Date Posted: 2008-07-30

Okinawan women are known for setting longevity records, but now, a new study shows the ladies here with the distinction of working the most.
The Ministry of General Affairs says Okinawa women work 179 hours a month, five more than the nationwide average. Men, by comparison, work an average 187 hours each month.
The Ministry attributes the characteristic to Okinawan women having a hard life since World War II, leading them to carry their babies on their backs while working in the fields. As the years progressed, officials say, women continued their hard lives but never gave up their dreams and happiness. The study notes older Okinawan women continue working, but are very healthy and living an environmentally pleasing lifestyle.
