Man found dead underwater in car at Tokashiki Port

Date Posted: 2003-09-13

A 39-year-old man was found dead inside his car Sunday at the bottom of the Tokashiki Fishing Port. According to Naha Police, Hiroshi Nishida’s family reported than he failed to return home from work Saturday evening. Members of the family said that although Nishida usually came home late, they called police when he had not returned by midnight Saturday. Police and villagers immediately began a search for the missing man, but were not able to find any signs of him or his car. Finally, searchers located his car in the sea off the fishing port. When divers inspected the car, they discovered Nishida’s body inside.

Police investigation concluded that no foul play was involved. Investigators found tire marks on the fishing port parking lot that match the tires of Nishida’s car. They also found a very dark tire mark on one of the stoppers at the parking space, apparently caused by a car driving over the stopper. Investigators believe that Nishida accidentally pushed the accelerator instead of the brake when he attempted to park, and drove over the edge into the sea.
