Water accidents death toll increases this yearDate Posted: 2008-07-25 A total of 47 water related accidents have been recorded through mid-July, with the majority attributed to tourists visiting Okinawa beaches and seashore. “These tourists don’t have much knowledge of the ocean,” a Coast Guard official says, and the weather has been so good, many more people are going to the beaches.” Snorkeling accidents account for 14 deaths, and another seven individuals are still missing. The Japan Coast Guard has been teaching people to use life jackets when snorkeling, but says the 14 who died were not wearing them. “They should get training on how to use snorkeling equipment, and wear life jackets too, an official says. Scuba diving accidents this year have taken 13 lives, and officials say two other divers remain missing. |
