Man, woman charged with insurance fraud

Date Posted: 2008-07-17

It began with a friendship struck up on an internet chat site, and ended when Ginowan City Police arrested two people on charges of committing insurance fraud.

Masako Kinjo and her partner, Toshiyuki Souma, are accused of ripping off a 33-year-old woman after they learned the woman had received a ¥20 million settlement from an automobile accident. The 29-year-old Kinjo and her 37-year-old accomplice talked with the woman on the internet chat site, offering to “take care of your insurance money.”

They told the woman “because you are sick, don’t worry. We’ll take care of you.” The victim has been suffering from brain disorders, and forgot that the hospital was already managing her money.

The hospital caught wind of the scheme when a worker noticed the money dwindling, and realizing the woman wasn’t capable of going to the bank herself. They alerted authorities, but the money had already been withdrawn from the woman’s account. Both Kinjo and Souma are denying the charges, insisting police “No. We didn’t take her money.”
