Labor board to check claims on workers overworked, underpaid

Date Posted: 2008-07-17

Workers at an Urasoe delivery company have filed a grievance with the Labor Standards Bureau, charging they’ve been working hundreds of hours overtime without getting paid for it.

Workers at Beverages Field charge they’ve been working more than ten years without getting fully paid. While two employees filed the official complaint, 32 workers claim they’ve been working more than 300 hours each, each month. The company’s posted working hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for workers, but the complainants say they’re required to work until midnight, but the time cards only reflect 171.5 hours. A company official claims he doesn’t know anything about past years, “because we only got the company to operate within the past year. How could we know about operations before?”

The Labor Standards Bureau says this isn’t the first complaint brought against Beverages Field. It says that aside from the current complaint, they are already investigating another working hours matter.
