Molotov cocktail lobbed into American Consulate Okinawa

Date Posted: 2008-07-17

A homemade Molotov cocktail was tossed over the wall of the US Consulate in Urasoe City early Monday, triggering a spate of security concerns but causing no damage.

The incident happened shortly after 1 a.m., sending Consulate security officials uncertain of what was happening into a higher security mode. Yasuhiko Yoshinaga, an Okinawa Police official, confirmed the homemade bomb struck in the Consulate’s garden, injuring nobody and causing no damage to the building.

The firebombing was witnessed by a person in the nearby parking lot. He called police. The flaming cocktail struck the concrete in the garden immediately adjacent to the Consulate. Officials say about 30 square centimeters of nearby lawn was damaged and burned. The fire burned itself out.

A small, black motorbike or motorcycle, police say, was seen outside the Consulate compound, in the vicinity of where the Molotov cocktail was tossed. Police say the witness who saw the motorbike was a local area resident.
