Urasoe hosts multi-venue weekend Tedako Festival

The Urasoe Tedako Festival this weekend is bigger than ever, in more ways than one.

The festival, which begins with a Pre-festival traditional dance at 5 pm Friday, is spread across six locations in Urasoe City during its Saturday and Sunday run. The pre-festival taks place at Yafuso Road pedestrian precinct, running until 10 p.m.

Iso Castle Ruin Park is the site of the Tedako Festival flame torch ceremony Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. Stage performances by the Urasoe Cultural Association get under way even before the official start, though. Entertainment begins at Urasoe City Tedako Hall at 1 p.m., with performances until 6 p.m. Also at Tedako Hall, the Summer Young Festival takes place from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The main stage at Urasoe Athletic Park is the place for children’s Eisaa dance beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by musical performances by several groups, including Kenichi Shiroma at 6 p.m. The official festival opening ceremonies run 6:50 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Urasoe Third King Festival begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by evening-ending fireworks 9 – 9:30 p.m.

Sunday’s Tedako Festival action kicks off at 9 a.m. at Makiminato Fisherman’s Wharf, where an all day Tedako Haarii tournament takes place A tuna cutting show runs 1 – 2 p.m.

A karaoke tournament for elderly citizens launches Sunday fun at Urasoe City Tedako Hall at 9:30 a.m. Cultural stage performances run through the afternoon, alongside the Summer Youth Festival 1 – 9 p.m. Urasoe City Athletic Park is the venue for track and field events from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Sunday evening on the Athletic Park main stage there will be traditional dance and karate performances, live music by Mongol 800 at 8:30 p.m., and the big dance finale. A fireworks display rounds out the Tedako Festival at 9 p.m.
