Hija River Kappa Festival offers Sunday activities

Date Posted: 2008-07-17

The 21st annual You You Hija River Kappa Festival takes place Sunday at Kadena Town’s Yara Castle Ruin Park.

The day-long event sponsored by Kadena Town’s Chamber of Commerce, Youth Union and Office Workers Union features unusual festival events including a screaming contest at 11 a.m., an eel catching game at 12:30 p.m., raft racing at 2 p.m. and demonstrations on how to hand-make oil soap at 3 p.m.

Organizers say participants can make their own rafts, or use rafts provided by the festival. Entry fee for the raft race is ¥1,000. The festival begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 7:30 p.m., with support from Kadena Town PTA, Town Office, Board of Education, Town Assembly, JA Okinawa and Okinawa Prefecture.

Evening events, which begin at 6 p.m., include live musical entertainment and shishi dragon dances, plus a water melon contest. Shuttle buses run from various locations throughout Kadena Town to the festival site. Details are available from the Kadena Town organizers, (098) 956-2810.
