Nago mayoral election to focus on base relocation

Date Posted: 2002-01-31

Candidates for the Feb. 3 Nago mayoral election were officially announced to the public on Jan. 27. Campaign hopefuls include 58-year-old incumbent Mayor Tateo Kishimoto, supported by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Komei Party. His main opponent is expected to be 42-year-old Yasuhiro Miyagi, who is backed by the Social Democratic Party and the Japan Communist Party. In addition, Mitsuo Matayoshi, 57, is also running for office. The election promises to focus on the controversial issue of relocating Futenma MCAS to the area. Mayor Kishimoto supports the move, while Miyagi is opposed to it. The results of the election are expected to exert significant influence on the relocation process.
