New highway to ease traffic congestion

Date Posted: 2008-07-10

It’s not finished yet, but a new highway linking Route 330 with Route 329 and Highway 58 is inching closer to completion.

Construction is in full gear on the route between Okinawa City, Kitanakagusuku and Uruma City. The 17.9 kilometer long highway will bisect Awase Golf Course and connect the major north-south thoroughfares. It will also connect Gushikawa and Uruma Cities, making the JUSCO Amusement Park easily accessible.

Officials predict the route will reduce traffic jams while attracting more people to the eastern side of the island. Additional construction is ongoing along the coastline, in the Nakagusuku Harbor / Fishermen’s Wharf areas. Okinawa City leaders are ecstatic about the new roadways, predicting it will boost the local economy.

The most difficult element of the construction is the 2.8km stretch linking Route 329 and the Route 330 Rycom Intersection with Hiyane Intersection. It’s a physical challenge as highway engineers battle ravines, jungle and mountains. Three tall concrete bridges have been built to span the depths—169 meters, 350 meters and 401 meters—before the asphalt ribbon pushes through a 259 meters long tunnel.
The Hiyagun Tunnels, each ten meters wide and 10.5 meters high, will be complete in three years.

Another major construction project is now under way, linking Ginowan City and the Kitanakagusuku area between Adaniya and Toguchi Intersection. It is projected to be open for traffic in 2022.
