Koza Jazz Night spotlights Fumio Karashima and new artists

Date Posted: 2008-07-04

The Fumio Karashima Trio draws crowds wherever it pumps out hot jazz, including a concert at Koza’s Music Town last Fall, when it drew thunderous applause.

The trio led by Japan’s most renowned pianist is coming back, headlining a Music Town Jazz Night next Thursday, July 10th. Fumio Karashima, who’s built an international reputation on the keyboards since 1980, will share the stage with an up and coming new jazz quintet, ‘Element of the Moment’.

Element of the Moment, dubbed ‘awesome young Okinawans’, features Tadashi Kohamoto on alto sax, Akira Nakamura on drums, Gandhi Nishigaki on bass, Yu-ji Hayashi on piano an Mitsuhiro Wada on trombone. Concert organizers say this Koza Music Town Jazz Night will introduce the new talent “in a luxurious mood of a time well spent.”

The 59-year-old Karashima, who’s recognized as the pianist who established the best piano technique in the field of jazz, will be joined by drummer Nobuyuki Komatsu and Bass player Ryu Kawamura for the jazz evening, ready to resurrect the memories of last September.

The Music Town Jazz Night takes place at Music Town Oto-Ichiba, 3rd floor, beginning at 7 p.m. July 10th. Doors open at 6 p.m. Advance tickets are ¥2,500, and ¥3,000 the day of the concert. Drinks will be available throughout the concert at ¥500 each. Japan Update will raffle a set of two tickets to the concert to next week’s JU weekly winners.
