Date Posted: 2002-09-06

A 36-year-old woman was arrested Sep. 2 on suspicion if killing her newborn baby in Okinawa City. According to Okinawa City Police, the woman came to the police station and confessed to the killing. Following her confession, the police went to her Okinawa City home, and discovered a skeleton of an infant buried about 20 cm deep in her back yard.

According to the woman’s confession, the baby was born in January 2001. At that time she had separated from her husband and was living in her parents’ house. She told the police that she delivered the baby alone at home, then wrapped the newborn in a blanket and buried it in her back yard.

Her parents apparently did not know that she had had a baby, as she used to work in a bar at nights and were most times alone in the house daytime as her parents worked, and she saw them seldom.

The woman said that she was desperate at the time because of his pending divorce, and she did not feel that she would have been able to care for the baby. She said she could not tell whether the infant had been a boy or girl.
