Businesses, resorts like new economic upswing

Date Posted: 2008-06-26

Business is booming on Okinawa, and companies and resort areas are pleased.

Money’s filtering into Okinawa now from a variety of sources, and Okinawa is taking advantage of every special measure possible, bringing a new sense of economic progress and increasing employment. A just-completed conference put the spotlight on Okinawa growth, citing the balance between a suitable environment and a positive work-life environment.

Okinawa continues to receive subsidy money in exchange for American military bases in the prefecture, and special tax reduction measures are beefing up prefecture coffers. Promotions now in the works target Okinawa to be the hub terminal for Asian countries doing business across the Pacific Rim, and the central government in Tokyo is beginning to eye Okinawa as a business mecca.

Fumio Kishida, Minister of Okinawa Development, ANA chairman Youji Ohasi and Nikko City Holdings Chairman Douglas Peterson told the conference the future is bright for Okinawa. “Okinawa is the show now, and all the world’s people are watching for business, because Asian countries are so close, and they’re learning about Okinawa’s fascination,” says the minister. “Costs here are very reasonable and advantageous,” adds another leader, noting “the Asian economic promotion and development will be the big chance to grow Okinawa.”
