Ishigaki Triathlon in danger after local city assembly jerks funding

Date Posted: 2008-06-26

The Ishigaki jima City Assembly has withdrawn funding for the popular Ishigaki jima Triathlon (ITU) Cup following a dispute with the city office.

The City Assembly had initially approved the triathlon’s ¥16,625,000 budget, but pulled it back after discovering the city office had made mistakes in a survey about community interest in the sports event. The Ishigaki City Office says the survey was made polling citizens 18 years of age and older, but it turned out youngsters were included in the poll.

“It’s a lie” assembly members charged. “You shouldn’t lie to assembly members.” The city office says it was an innocent mistake. The City Assembly chairman resigned over the brouhaha, saying “the relationship between city offices and the assembly are destroyed. The survey had indicated wide community interest in keeping and funding the triathlon.

An emergency meeting is set by the triathlon organizing committee for July, and a meeting of the All Japan Triathlon Union is scheduled for August, in preparation for the Beijing Olympics.
