More local products are needed for spa business

Date Posted: 2008-06-20

Esthetic and Spas are big business in Japan and Okinawa, but the Okinawa General Bureau is concerned local products are not getting a fair share of the action.

Okinawa’s Esthetic and Spa business, the Prefecture says, is generating ¥11.3 billion in annual revenues, but less than one-third of the products applied to customers comes from the prefecture. There are 454 esthetic and spa facilities in Okinawa, with the 59 more expensive salons located inside hotels.

Hotel esthetic and spa salon services range from ¥12,000~15,000, and Okinawa General Bureau’s survey found that 60.7% of the products being used come from overseas. Okinawa original products account for 32.1% of the creams, lotions and oils. In smaller facilities, Okinawa products fare even more poorly, with only 18.2% of the treatment products originating here.

Spa and hotel operators say they’d be interested, but “It’s because there is never enough Okinawan raw materials to product what we need, and there’s no explanation about how effective Okinawa products are, how to use them, or what they’re made form.” Spa managers say there must be clear definitions of what Okinawa products are, and how they work.

Officials say there are raw materials for esthetic salons, but the production scales are too small to make effective business. They urge investors to study the market and then step into the business.
