Misleading job ads land agency in court

Date Posted: 2008-06-20

Seven Okinawans lured to mainland Japan by false advertising placed by a temporary staffing agency have taken the company to court, charging they were lied to.

The classified job advertisements promised “We will pay you big money” for working in an auto parts factory, but when the seven arrived at Aichi Prefecture’s Toyota affiliated company to work, they found life much different than expected. “We moved to Nagoya City from Okinawa because they promised high pay, and we liked the job,” the employees say in the brief filed in Nagoya District Court.

At the initial hearing in Nagoya this week, the workers say “we liked the job, but they didn’t pay us what they had promised.” Wages were much less than promised in the classified ad.

A side issue lodged by one of the workers was that he was unfairly fired after he took a day off when his daughter became sick. “It’s not fair,” he says, but the company disagrees. The company says it will fight the charges.
