Manta pregnancy has aquarium officials crossing their fingers

Date Posted: 2008-06-20

It’s nail-biting time for Churaumi Aquarium officials who say their very popular manta ray is pregnant.

The manta ray was pregnant a year ago, delivering her baby under the watchful eyes of the aquarium specialists, and even the television cameras. Six days later, though, the baby was dead and nobody knew why. Now, the manta ray is on track to be a mama again, and aquarium officials say they’re ready for a delivery soon…perhaps later this week.

The mother-to-be was given to Churaumi Aquarium in 1998 after being caught in the fixed shore nets of a Yomitan fisherman. The aquarium says little is known about a manta ray’s life or ecology, and there are still mysteries to be unraveled. They’re hoping that this time the baby will be okay, and that scientists will be able to use the information observed from the birth.
