Dry rainy season concerns farmers

Date Posted: 2008-06-20

The Okinawa Weather Bureau has made it official; the rainy season is over, nearly a week earlier than last year.

The annual rainy season has ended its hovering over Okinawa and moved north to the Kyushu area, leaving farmers worried. The official end to the season was Tuesday, the weather prognosticators say, six days earlier than average, and without producing expected rainfall.

The brief rainy season is being called “the third shortest on record” by the Meteorological Agency, which notes little rain fell during the weeks-long season. Farmers are at the head of those worried about what happens now, saying they’re going to feel the impact in agricultural goods, vegetables and fruits. Farmers and citizens also are wondering how seriously the dry summer ahead will impact trees and flowers.
