Residents still struggling two years after landslide

Date Posted: 2008-06-13

Special victim assistance money being paid to families whose homes were lost or damaged when a landslide brought a hillside in the Nakagusuku Village Kitauehara area down on them saw those payments dry up Tuesday, two years after the incident.

A concrete containment wall has been constructed around the area where lush green forests were before the landslide crashed down onto houses. Two families are still living in the homes, who say they couldn’t go anywhere else. Three other families have been staying in temporary housing paid for by the government.

One has now found new accommodations, but two remaining families are now facing paying their own rent since expiration of the special assistance measures June 10th. Kiyoshi Yara, one of those still without a home, says “without a house or road, we can’t even go back to our own land and rebuild our house.”
