Sun Marina Buffet goes health conscious

Date Posted: 2008-06-13

There’s plenty to see and do on a sunny weekend or holiday drive around northern Okinawa and Onna Village, but no excursion is complete without checking out the refurbished luncheon buffet at Sun Marina Hotel.

Seasonal ingredients fresh from farm and ocean are paramount in Sun Marina’s goal of having a most fabulous buffet designed within a “locally produced and consumed” theme. Always a good buffet, the Sun Marina Hotel Lunch Buffet is now exceptional, with more than 60 dishes on the serving line, up from 30 in an earlier time.

Management opted to skillfully blend health conscious dishes with visually appealing Japanese, Western and Okinawan entrees, all served in the gracious ambience of the lobby and its tranquil view of the fountain under a nine-story hall. Another dining option is in the spacious café area, where large windows allow patrons to look out over the beach.

From appetizer to desserts, there’s a wide variety of choice for every taste; pizza, roasted herb chicken and croquette are tops in western fare, while sushi, somen noodles in a cold broth and marinated vegetables accent the Japanese buffet line. Chefs set out a local favorite, peanut tofu, along with pork dishes in the Okinawa section. There’s also popular beef curry and rice available.

For those with a flair for something extra special, the chef’s grill stand offers cooked-to-order dishes. The choices change daily, but include steaks, crab or other seasonal items.

It’s do-it-yourself at the healthy juice bar, where freshly squeezed fruits and vegetables are waiting to be pressed into exactly the drink you want. Sweets are spread out across the nearby dessert counter, with most offerings handmade in the hotel with fresh local ingredients. There’s pretty much a guarantee the desserts will satisfy that after-meal craving for sweets.

Sun Marina has opened a new membership program, the Lunch Buffet Point Card Club. Members may purchase the adult buffet for ¥1,500 any time, then use the accumulated points to earn a free buffet. Through the end of June, Sun Marina is offering a special to non-members who present this article, or a Sun Marina ad. Non-members pay the member price of ¥1,500 instead of the standard ¥2,079. Parking is free at Sun Marine for two hours for dining guests.
