Prosecutor wants jail time for Kadena airman

Date Posted: 2008-06-08

The Naha District Prosecutorís Office wants Senior Airman Darius A. Brunson to go to prison for orchestrating an attack on a taxi driver.
The 22-year-old Brunson, a security policeman assigned to the 18th Security Forces Squadron at Kadena Air Base, has already pleaded guilty to convincing three teenagers to rob a cab driver last March 16th. Brunson, together with a 19-year-old military dependent, watched over the crime scene from a nearby car as two other teens attacked the 55-year-old taxi driver and stole about •10,000. In the course of that robbery, the teens assaulted the driver.
Prosecutor Yukio Nakajima wants Brunson put behind bars for three years, arguing the airman behaved badly for a man charged with upholding the law. Satoshi Kawamitsu, Brunsonís attorney, countered that Brunson is remorseful and would never again commit such an act. Kawamitsu is asking Brunson be given a suspended sentence. The court will decide at a sentencing hearing June 23rd.
One of the four teenagers involved in the mugging incident has been put on probation by the Naha Family Court. The Naha Public Prosecutorís Office says charges against the other three teens have been dismissed.
