Thief mugs coffee shop worker, steals ¥400,000

Date Posted: 2008-06-06

A coffee shop employee is in critical condition in a local hospital after having his head bashed in by a hammer-wielding thief.

The robbery occurred about 6:50 a.m. Monday at a coffee shop in Naha City’s Maejima area. Police say they got a call from the coffee shop asking “Please help. One of my staff has been attacked by a robber”. Reconstructing the scene, police say the assailant first ordered breakfast like any other customer and had it delivered to his seat.

Moments later, the robber jumped from his chair, pulled out a hammer, and viciously struck the employee in the head 2-3 times. With the employee laying on the floor, the robber casually opened the cash register and stole the ¥400,000 before fleeing.

Doctors say the employee’s skull was fractured and caved in on one side. Police are searching for the thief.
