Kadena airman makes confesses in court to role in taxi robberies

Date Posted: 2008-06-06

A 21-year-old security policeman assigned to Kadena Air Base has admitted to the Naha District Court he played a principal role in the March robbery of an Okinawa City taxi driver.

Senior Airman Darius A. Brunson pleaded guilty to charges, telling the court he was responsible for setting up and committing the robbery together with a group of four 15~19-year-old teens. Three teens attacked the 55-year-old taxi driver on March 16th, beating the driver before taking roughly ¥6,000 and some other items from his taxi. The incident happened near Kadena Air Base Gate 2, leaving the driver with minor injuries.

Brunson, assigned to the 18th Security Forces Squadron, made the admissions after the prosecutor, Tomoyuki Shirai, told the court Brunson had planned the robbery at is residence on base. Brunson solicited the teens’ support by telling them he needed money.

He is expected to testify tomorrow, after which both prosecution and defense attorneys will begin their closing arguments.
