Illegally moored boats ordered removed from Tomari Port

Date Posted: 2008-06-06

Tomari Port has nearly two dozen illegally anchored—or abandoned—boats in its waters, and Okinawa Prefecture wants them removed.

Many of the boats have been in the harbor for 20 years, and have decayed. Tomari Fishing Port, operated by Okinawa Prefecture, has ordered the boats removed, and set up a special committee to make plans and take action. Officials say the first nine boats to go could take 5-6 years to remove, an that the cost could reach ¥30 million.

There are more than 20 non-operational boats in the port, and owners have been ordered to get them out. The problem, Prefecture officials say, is that many boat owners have died or moved away. In other cases, they say, boat owners know how expensive it would be to remove the boats, and have simply ignored the directives.
