Drunken school teacher convicted of killing manDate Posted: 2008-06-06 The 2006 incident involved a group of teachers who’d traveled from Naha City to Iheya island to go camping and have barbeques during the summer vacation. The teachers and school administrators had been partying, then decided “let’s go to a local snack bar to have fun and drunk.” The 28-year-old teacher who got behind the wheel was drunk, and nobody stopped him. As he backed up the van, he encountered an obstacle. Getting out and looking, he saw a man under the rear wheel of the vehicle. Police say the victim, who was very drunk himself and was laying in the street, died instantly. The judge ordered the teacher driving the van to pay the victim’s family ¥83,000, although the family had sought a judgment of ¥140,000. The judge ruled that the victim wasn’t guilt free in the case, being drunk and in the street, and stripped 20% of the amount from his ruling. The driver had been ordered to appear at the court house, but failed to do so. He also failed to apologize to the victim’s family, so the judge made the ruling against the teacher. |
