Okinawan municipalities prepare for round of elections

Several Okinawan municipalities are scheduled to hold elections this Sunday. Residents of Nago, Gushikawa, Okinawa, Ginowan and Ishigaki Cities will go to the polls to elect their assembly members while Ishikawa City holds both the mayoral and assembly elections.

In the elections, 199 hopefuls vie for the total of 161 assembly seats. In Nago City 37 candidates compete for 30 seats in the assembly, Ishikawa has 28 candidates for 22 seats, Gushikawa 29 for 25 seats, Okinawa City 39 for 30 seats, Ginowan 36 for 30 seats and in Ishigaki City 30 vie for 24 seats.

Of 184 men and 15 women who take part, 168 report that they have no party affiliation. 15 report of being members of religious parties, 10 are communists, 5 socialists and one says that he is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. Other 10 towns and 12 villages in the prefecture will hold elections a week later on Sep. 15.
