Late, but rainy season now here

Date Posted: 2008-05-24

Okinawa is now officially in the rainy season.
The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory and local weather prognosticators have declared the annual phenomena in effect, 14 days later than average and nearly a week later than last year. The meteorological observatories also declared the rainy season in effect for Amami Island in Kagoshima Prefecture.
Forecasters say this is the third latest start to the annual rainy season for Okinawa since they began keeping records in 1951. Amami and the surrounding area began the rainy season 12 days later than normal.
The delay, says the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory, was caused by a later than usual formation of the primary rain front, which was being influenced by a massive high pressure system blanketing the Pacific.
