Nesting mom chases firemen from station showers room

Date Posted: 2008-05-24

The shower room at Haebaru Town’s East Coast Fire Station Headquarters is off limits to firemen, at least for a while.

Seems a mama bulbul bird decided to make the shower room home, and home means a nest for her new babies. A fireman first discovered the new occupants when he kept finding brown leaves on the shower room floor. He first thought they were being tracked in by fellow firemen, but after cleaning up a couple times, looked up toward the ceiling to see if the wind could be blowing leaves in.

No holes were in the ceiling, and no windows open, either. And then the leaves were spotted on a shelf in the shower room, prompting Tetsuya Nakamoto to climb above the shelf and take a look. What he found was a bunch of brown leaves…forming a bird’s nest.

Even more surprising, Nakamoto found four birds eggs in the nest during his peek just before Golden Week. When the fire crew returned after the holiday break on May 6th, they checked the shower room and found all four eggs had hatched, boosting the room’s occupancy to five.

The shower is off limits to all staff, but firemen and staff say it’s no problem. They’re loving the young birds, and everyone is happy to check on them every day. An official says they expect the young birds to soon fly the nest, and the staff says they’re all feeling like parents.
