Threatening letter forces Yaese Town to cancel school event

Date Posted: 2008-05-24

Anonymous threats to children who were to participate in a Children’s Olympic Tournament has forced school officials and the Yaese Town mayor to cancel the sports program.

The threatening letter said “This tournament should not be forced attendance by children.” It said children who don’t want to participate shouldn’t have to, and told the school “make the rules to say children have the choice to attend or not. There should be freedom, and not force, to have children attend.”

The writer warned school and city officials “If you guys don’t stop the tournament, I have some ideas what to do to the children”, and he asked “Can you protect the children from me, or can you take responsibility for the children?” The letter told the school officials to shut down the tournament scheduled May 18th at Kochinda Track Field. It didn’t say what would happen to the children.

The threats sent the school principal, Yaese Town police, the mayor and parents into an emergency meeting, where the decision was made to cancel the tournament for now. A Board of Education official says another day will be better, promising “We will do it in September.”
