Kitaya is izakaya with a family focus

Fresh sushi and sashimi are a mainstay at Izakaya Kitaya, but equally important to its owners is its commitment to serving families.

Izakayas are scattered across the island, with alcohol typically an equal partner with the food being served guests. Izakaya Kitaya is different, because the focus is on food served in a wholesome atmosphere suitable for families. Open since last December, Kitaya is located just outside Camp Foster, across from the Camp Foster Fire Station.

Sushi and sashimi served at Izakaya Kitaya can’t get any fresher, as Naoki Tsukayama makes the trek each morning to the fish market to purchase only the very best fish. Tsukayama, the izakaya owner, was with a restaurant in Osaka before opening his endeavor on Okinawa.

Together with chef Tomoki Fukuyama, who trained in cooking in the United States, and Tsukayama, Izakaya Kitaya has a variety of individual menu items, including 24 types of rolls. The restaurant also offers many items tailored to youngsters’ palates. Tops among the rolls are the Special Roll from ¥400, California Roll ¥600, Broiled Salmon Roll for ¥700 and a tasty spicy Tuna Roll for ¥420.

Izakaya Kitaya is very much a Japanese atmosphere, with table seating suited to westerners and Kotatsu built into the floor style seats. Fukuyama and Tsukayama tout the taste and value of their Sakana Butter Combo for ¥1,200, a Teriyaki or Garlic Chicken Combo for ¥1,300, or mahi mahi fixed with teriyaki or garlic for ¥560.

The izakaya is featuring Orion Beer Mugishokunin for a limited time, at ¥130 per glass. Orion on draught is ¥460, while bottled Orion beer goes for ¥500. Izakaya Kitaya also serves Budweiser for ¥360, Corona for ¥400, Miller for ¥380 and Heineken for ¥450. Awamori, Sake and mixed drinks are also available.

Izakaya Kitaya is open daily, except Sunday, 4:30 p.m. to midnight, with last order each day at 11 p.m. Reservations are recommended for groups, and required for parties. Regular reservations can be made at (098) 926-1603, while party reservations are booked at (090) 7475-8557. Parking is available at the restaurant.
