Ryudai professor nabbed for lewd acts with minor

Date Posted: 2002-09-06

A 65-year-old professor emeritus of the University of the Ryukyus was arrested Sep. 2 on suspicion of lewd acts and corrupting a minor. According to investigators, Professor Hirokazu Kawahira contacted the 15-year-old girl via so called “Dial-Two” telephone service in May, and arranged to meet her after school. He reportedly gave the girl ¥15,000 in cash and took her into his car. He then drover her to a farmyard where the lewd acts took place.

The girl’s family had reported her to the police in August when she ran away. The police found the girls in a park in August, and when questioned about her means to support herself while on the run, she told the police. She also remembered the license number of the professor’s car that the police used to track him down.

Professor Hirokatsu is a known specialist in French language, and the chairman of the Center for Overseas Students. Recently, he had received an award for his achievements with international student exchange programs.
