Nago City dogs lover in dispute with officials

Date Posted: 2008-05-09

A Nago City man has more than 57 dogs running around his home, and both the Nago City Animal Protection Management Center and Okinawa Prefecture are telling him things must change.

The government agencies have told the man neighbors are complaining “we can’t stand the ad smell, and the dogs’ barking makes residents crazy and keeps people from having peaceful sleep,” and told him to clean up his act. For starters, they’ve told the man all of the animals must be vaccinated against rabies.

“We have been telling him many times to get the vaccinations and take good care of the dogs,” a Prefecture Animal Protection Management Center official says, “but he never listens to us.” He says the next time they check on the man, and he’s not complied with instructions to get the shots and clean up his house , “we are going to lodge an official complaint against him with police.”

Residents say they wouldn’t complain if the man would “take good care of the 57 dogs, but he doesn’t take care of them at all.” They say his house and yard have lots of garbage, empty cans and dog food left over, leaving the entire neighborhood with a stench.

The dogs lover claims people are overreacting, saying defensively “I just find dogs everywhere. People are throwing them away, and I feel bad for the dogs, so I bring them to my home.”
