Mild weather bodes ill for Okinawa cropsDate Posted: 2008-05-06 Hokkaido, on the other hand, is supposed to still have snow on the ground in Japan’s northernmost Prefecture. It doesn’t. Temperatures in Hokkaido are 30-31C, more like summer. That worries local farmers, who have been counting on hot weather to boost production of rice and fruits here. Weather forecasters are beginning to predict Okinawa will be in for a cool summer, with few hot days. Hokkaido officials, at the same time, are worrying the unseasonably warm temperatures are going to mess up the Hokkaido cherry blossoms, spurring their growth too early. Japan Meteorological Agency officials say the summer-like temperatures came as a result of winds blowing the heated air across the Sea of Okhotsk. They say Hokkaido temperatures will drop back to cooler levels, but add the north will remain warmer than Okinawa. |
