Okinawa Marines to join worldwide DoD exercise

Date Posted: 2008-05-06

Marine Corps installations on Okinawa will be joining bases around the world Tuesday through Friday in a force protection exercise.
The III Marine Expeditionary Force / Marine Corps Bases Japan says the force protection exercise is designed to evaluate each installation’s force protection capabilities and ability to counter or contain a terrorist threat. Second Lieutenant Steward M. Coles, the public affairs officer, says “this exercise is not being done to counter any real world scenario or threat, but to test and evaluate our fores response and readiness to handle force protection activities.”
The force protection exercise is a Department of Defense and Marine Corps annual training requirement for forces throughout the world. Coles says “during the exercise, people entering the base or driving near the base entrances could notice an increase in security measures, and some gate closures will occur. The community’s awareness, understanding and cooperation are appreciated.”
