Man dies, woman in coma after Golden Week water incidents

Water accidents near Ie Island and Onna Village on Okinawa’s northwest coast have claimed one life, while a woman clings to life in a hospital.
The 11th Maritime Safety Agency, Japan Coast Guard, says a tourist from Ibaragi Prefecture drowned while diving off Ie Island. A dive boat captain had radioed “please help us. One of our customers is floating on the water, and he looks unconscious.” Rescuers took the tourist to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A Nago City woman drowned in waters off Onna Beach. A diving shop owner found the woman about 20 meters from the beach, and took the unconscious woman to a hospital. A witness told police the 36-year-old Nago City woman was earlier seen walking back and forth on the seawall at Onna Village beach. As of Monday afternoon, the woman remains in a coma.
