Cops arrest man after trying ‘grandson’ scam

Date Posted: 2008-05-02

Yoshinobu Gima thought he was pretty slick, calling an elderly Okinawa City woman to tell her “grand mom, I’m your grandson and I have a problem with my car.”

He asked the 87-year-old woman to help him out. “My car got broken into and I need to get it repaired, but have no money. Can you give me some?” Gima asked. After some banter about money, the woman agreed, and Gima told her his friend would come by and pick up the money.

Gima’s fortunes turned, though, when the woman’s real grandson showed up at her home unannounced. “Didn’t you call me to get money for your car?” she asked him. “Are you dreaming?” he replied. “There’s nothing wrong with my car. It’s not broken. I have it.” Shocked, the woman asked her grandson “then who called me?”

The grandson contacted Okinawa City Police to report the fraud attempt. Police who arrested the 45-year-old Gima say he has confessed to a number of such crimes, trying to get money.
