Okinawa holds womenís world longevity title

Date Posted: 2008-05-02

Okinawa women continue to live longer than women anywhere in the world, and those in Kitanakagusuku Village can claim to be best of the best.

New statistics from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare show Kitanakagusuku Village women live to an average age of 89.3, well above Hyogo Prefectureís Kinunagawa Town, where women routinely live to be 88.7. The new report covers all of Japan, and incorporates data from around the world.

Okinawa places four communities in the top ten for womenís longevity. Tomigusuku Town in Okinawa and Nagano Prefectureís Takamori Town are tied for third, with women living to be 88.5, while southern Nanjo City claims fifth with an average womenís age of 88.3. Chatan Town placed ninth with 87.8 years of long living by its women. Okinawa City women are having the roughest time, living to be only 85.6 years of age.

Overall, Okinawa women hold the world record at 86.9 years of life, a notch above Japan itself, where the average is 85.8 years. Officials say Okinawa and Japanís mainland women are well above the figures for the rest of the world.

Men arenít faring so well, slipping to a 30th place ranking. Okinawa men arenít even matching the Japan average 78.8years, claiming an average of 78.7 years. Ginoza Village men are dying faster than anywhere in Okinawa, living only to age 77.
