Marriott Resort offers top notch Seafood Buffet

Date Posted: 2008-05-02

Erol Miftahittin is a hotelier whose experience spans the globe. Terry Hamada is an award-winning international chef. Hokkaido is home to northern Asia’s most expansive and reputable seafood supplies.

Each is a success story, but Okinawa Marriott Resort & Spa has brought the three together to create the best Seafood Buffet on Okinawa. Only three years old, the Marriott property has been gaining both a local and nationwide reputation for an exclusive level of services. Today, with the posting of Erol Miftahittin as General Manager, and Terry Hamada as Assistant General Manager, both styles and services have soared even more.

Miftahittin, an American, was lured to Okinawa by Marriott after stints managing hotels in international resort chains, including Hilton International and Onward Beach Resort in Guam. Hamada, an internationally known chef who’s won three international cooking competitions, has lead food service operations with Westin, Four Seasons and Sheraton in major cities around the world. Marriott has brought his culinary experience into play as Assistant General Manager at Okinawa Marriott Resort and Spa.

The Miftahittin-Hamada team, looking for a signature event that would garner attention far beyond the Okinawa shores, created the All-Star Buffet, a sumptuous food line offering a varied menu of Japanese, Chinese and Western dishes. From appetizer to main dish, choices are sufficiently varied there’s an appealing choice for every taste: choices of ham, marinated shrimp, a salad bar with numerous fresh vegetables, sautéed chicken wings, baked fish in a Chinese style dressing, Okinawa style stir-fried vegetables with port, and many more dishes.

King crab is exactly that, king of the sprawling seafood side of the buffet. Boiled giant king crab, succulent long legged crab that spill over the plates, entice diners back to the seafood bar over, and over, and over. Of course, a variety of prawns, mussel, scallops and other shellfish are on the line as well.

What makes the seafood so out-of-this-world is the freshness, a rare-in-Okinawa circumstance made possible by Marriott’s exclusive direct-from Hokkaido shipping route. Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture, is known worldwide for its quality seafood, and now serving guests only at Marriott’s All-Star Buffet. Also worthy of note is the scallop sashimi, a scallop as divine as octopus, to be recommended even by those who aren’t normally adventurous. For the seafood lover, it’s simply heavenly.

Steaks, cooked-to-order, are at the head of the American side of the buffet, as is a delectable clam chowder served in a bread bowl. Desserts are equally tasty, with everybody’s choices available at all times. Places to start? Try the chocolate cake, strawberry mousse, fresh fruits, and the Okinawan sweets; creamy brown sugar flan and the juicy jello sweet-tart acerole.

The Okinawa Marriott Resort & Spa is an ideal place to visit, whether on a trip to the northern side of the island, or simply as part of an out-and-about drive. The Luncheon Buffet is served in a special setting where guests select one dish from each of the buffet’s sections. The lunch buffet begins at ¥2,400 for adults and ¥1,200 for children. The Dinner Buffet is ¥5,000 for adults and ¥2,500 for children. Reservations can be made at (0980)51-1000.

To get to Okinawa Marriott Resort & Spa take the Okinawa Expressway to the last exit at Kyoda, Nago City. After exit return towards Naha on Hwy 58 until you see the entrance to the Busena Resort on the seaside. The entrance with a sign to Marriott is on the opposite side (left) of the road. Or if you don’t mind the time – it is about one-hour drive – take the Hwy 58 north from Kadena and drive until your see the sign.
