Unusually high tides flood roads at Tomari Port

Date Posted: 2003-09-06

Unusually high tide Friday caused the sea level to rise so much that the water flooded the sidewalks around Tomari Wharf in Naha City. Some residential houses also had water come under their floors, but no property damage was reported. Similar flooding was reported at Ogimi, Katsuren, and Motobu. In some places, blocked drainage ditches compounded the flood. And in Motobu, in at least in one residence the water rose over the floor level of the bathroom.

An extraordinary high tide flooded a sweet potato field in Ginowan City in August 2001, destroying the crop. Following the flood, the city installed floodgates and that saved the potato fields this time. Naha City has similar floodgates in place in Kokuba River that prevented any damage in Oroku area.
