Lilies the stars at Ie Island festival

Date Posted: 2008-04-25

Ie Island on Okinawa’s northwest coast is excited about its 13th annual Ie Island Lily Festival, which gets under way Saturday.

The festival mixing more than 200,000 Teppo Yuri lily blossoms, music and dance this year spans three weekends, running through May 5th. Each weekend will feature a mix of entertainment together with thousands of flowers blooming in the Spring sunshine. The 11 a.m. opening ceremonies Saturday are laced with Children’s Eisaa dance, the lily blossoms declaration and tape cutting, and a ladies’ bamboo dance. Sunday there’ll be a strike out tournament.

April 26th festivities include the opening of a mini zoo, eisaa dance and live music, along with an Okinawa traditional dance performance at 2:40 p.m. Naha taiko drums perform at 4 p.m., with an Ie Island folk song festival to follow at 5 p.m. On stage Sunday evening are the Shima Lily Taiko Drums, a Shakari concert and Yukito Ara live concert.

Sunday the 27th is a fun-filled schedule, starting with Eiga Nakasone in concert at 11:30 a.m., followed by a folk song festival being broadcast live on radio. A karaoke festival rounds out the afternoon, before the Takemitsu Makamoto concert begins at 6:30 p.m. Kozue Chinen performs at 7 p.m., and Isamu Shimoji rounds out the stage show at 8:30 p.m.

May 5th, the Ie Island Lily Festival’s last day, has a live evening performance by Red Jets.

Ferries will be sailing every hour during Golden Week April 29th ~ May 5th. Ferries sail from the Motobu Fishing Port for the 5.5 mile trek to the island off the Motobu coastline.
