Okinawan teens busted for underage drinking

Date Posted: 2008-04-18

Vigilant law enforcement officers in Ginowan and Naha Cities broke up to late night drinking parties involving teenagers Monday.

Police in Ginowan City caught four young teens, including two 16-year-old girls, drinking in a park. The youth were students at Ginowan High School.

At nearly the same time, Naha City Police broke up a party stretching to 2:30 a.m., taking nine teens into custody in a Shuri area park. The teens were all Naha High School students. Police confiscated a 1.8 liter bottle of awamori the students were drinking from. One told police “We are having a goodbye party. Our friends are leaving Okinawa soon.”

Japanese law prohibits alcohol consumption by people under the age of 20. Police say teen drinking is on the rise in Okinawa, where the junior and senior high school students are trying to act like adults and experience the feelings of getting drunk.
