U.S. civilian dependent confesses to drug use

Date Posted: 2008-04-18

The dependent spouse of a Marine Corps employee has pleaded guilty to using phenylmethyl aminopropane and inhaling it March 1st at a Yomitan home.

Manuel Taitano was arrested by Japanese narcotics investigators during a drug raid at the home. His supplier, 29-year-old Yuichi Mekaru and Taitano were at Satsuki Kawamura’s home when the bust went down. Police say Mekaru had been under investigation for some time. Also arrested was Ryo Shinjo, 31.

The 42-year-old Taitano pleaded with the judge for an easy sentence, noting he had no prior criminal record on the island. Judge Hiroyuki Yoshii heard Taitano ask for another chance, explaining he had work related problems that led to his depression. The judge can sentence Taitano to as many as 18 months in prison for the drug offense at his April 28th court appearance.
