Predicting weather is a tricky business at best, but that’s where men and women working at Okinawa Meteorogical Bureau excel. According to government officials, the weather forecasts were correct 78 percent of time in Okinawa this summer, whereas the unusual weather patterns hobbled the forecasters in mainland Japan, who got their predictions right only 59 percent of the time. Helping Okinawan forecasters was the fact that the weather here has followed the usual patterns, while the summer in mainland prefectures has been exceptionally wet and cold.
