Modern, new passenger, cargo terminals set for Naha Airport

Date Posted: 2008-04-11

Naha International Airport is growing to accommodate increasing numbers of passengers and more air cargo.

A new runway position and airline slot planning project is soon to be unveiled by the central Japan government, while local companies are beginning construction of new passenger and cargo terminals. A new Naha Airport Cargo Terminal facility is to open in 2010 on the site of the old domestic airport. Daiei Air Cargo Company which now operates the cargo terminal, will also serve the new terminal. Japan Air Line, All Nippon Airways and Galaxy Air Line now use the cargo facility, but seven additional companies are expected to begin operations at the new four-building cargo facility at Naha airport. The 10 billion project begins construction this summer. ANA is also in the process of opening an international physical distribution plant, which was scheduled to open next year but will probably be delayed to coincide with opening of the new cargo terminal in 2010.

Both domestic and international terminals at Naha Airport will undergo major renovations and reconstruction, working with a budget of 35-40 billion. The domestic terminal is to be expanded, and an international terminal will be built. It will be connected to the domestic terminal to eliminate travel transfer hassles for passengers.

The international airport terminal will be a state-of-the-art facility, complete with air bridges to connect the terminal to planes, eliminating the need for bussing passengers to their flights. The current cargo terminal will be demolished and the international terminal building expanded to cover the cargo area.

Naha Airport, operated by Naha Airport Building Company, says both the new international terminal and expanded domestic terminal are needed to handle increasing numbers of passengers. The new terminals are to be in operation starting in 2012, and completed by 2015.
