JSDF member gets 20 years for 2005 pachinko parlor murder

Date Posted: 2008-04-11

Takuya Hara is headed to prison for 20 years for stabbing a man with an umbrella, then bashing his head with a concrete block during a 2005 robbery near a Naha City pachinko parlor.

The Japanese Self Defense Force member had watched Masanori Kawamitsu at the Makishi area pachinko parlor, as he exchanged the balls into cash, then followed and robbed him. During the robbery, the then 26-year-old beat and stabbed Kawamitsu to death. Police watched security camera videos taken at the pachinko hall and saw the school owner being observed as he cashed in his winnings, and then saw Hara follow the victim out of the building.

Kawamitsu’s wife had demanded Hara pay ¥100 million in compensation, and the Naha District Court agreed. Hara has likewise agreed, promising the court “I agree to pay the survivors the money,” but he has no assets and will be in prison for the next two decades. Officials say Hara will likely be making the damage award payments for the rest of his life.
