Date Posted: 2008-04-11

After a five-year break in service, Hong Kong Express is once more flying the skies between Hong Kong and Okinawa.

The inaugural flight carried a mix of 160 golfers, newly wed couples and businessmen. Beginning with the first flights April 3rd,there are planes flying to Okinawa Thursday and Sunday until April 28th, when Hong Kong Express jumps to four flights weekly on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The airline is flying Boeing 737-800 aircraft configured for 164 passengers.

“In the future,” says Hong Kong Express President Nee Choy, “we are planning to fly every day.” The airline had flown to Okinawa until five years ago, when services were dropped. Hirokazu Nakaima predicts “I’m expecting to get a lot of tourists from Hong Kong.” The Okinawa governor says he hopes to “make friendship together, not just tourism.”

The governor thinks there’s a solid need for cultural expansion, as well as economic reasons to promote Hong Kong Express. The airline began charter service to Okinawa a year ago, and businesses here say “we want to get enterprise companies and distributors moving here to boost the economic situation.”
